The challenge of infant feeding – e-learning resource

We have developed flexible educational materials to meet the needs of a wide range of health and social care practitioners, doctors and service commissioners in relation to supporting optimum infant and young child feeding. These will be delivered through online distance learning via the University of York Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The learning materials are designed to be studied as stand-alone learning units, however for students who choose to complete three units.

The resource comprises three learning units, each requiring approximately 10 hours of study.  Unit one contains core material appropriate to all potential target groups and must be studied prior to undertaking subsequent units. Unit one is intended to meet the needs of those who do not have direct contact with women and babies e.g. service commissioners, or who need only basic knowledge e.g. some support workers. For those requiring further in depth knowledge, the remaining units may be studied on a stand-alone basis.   Those wishing to study three units will be able to register with the University of York for a stand-alone module or may choose the module as part of a Continuing Professional Development pathway.

The three learning units are:

  • Why Infant Feeding Matters and Fundamental Knowledge and Skills
  • Supporting Women and Families with Infant Feeding
  • Supporting Women  who Experience Common Clinical Breastfeeding Problems
