Estimates suggest that between 300,000 and 1,400,000 adverse events occur each year in the NHS and that about half of those that occur in the context of inpatient admissions are preventable. The cost to the NHS includes an estimated £2 billion a year in the extra time patients have to spend in hospital, £1 billion in the costs of associated infections, and more than £400 million in clinical negligence claims. It is against this background that the NHS has been challenged to put “safety first”.

Focus on … Safety in Numbers

Safety in Numbers is a new network for anyone in Yorkshire and Humber interested in improving patient safety in their team, unit or organisation.

With the changes happening in the NHS including the closing of the National Patient Safety Agency we are keen that the existing good practice and networking across the region isn’t lost (for example the Safer Patients Network and the Training and Action for Patient Safety (TAPS) network).   Whether you are an individual, a team, an organisation or a large regional group, we will give support connecting you with each other and help to navigate your way through the various structures and information to get the knowledge and support you need, when and where you need it.  Sign up here.

Why join?

This is a ‘grassroots’ network that cuts across traditional boundaries to bring together colleagues delivering healthcare and academics interested in patient safety.  Anyone involved in healthcare can become a member – and patients are welcome to join too.  The group will be focused on the needs of the Yorkshire and Humber area but the knowledge shared will be wider and cover the UK, and where relevant, international resources.

Joining the network is free.  Becoming a member of the network will mean you can:

  • Connect with colleagues across the region working on similar patient safety issues
  • Access to free resources currently including SAVI videos and Introduction to Patient Safety on-line module
  • Participate in our Patient Safety On-line Forum
  • Receive up to date news and updates on all things patient safety through Twitter and regular e-bulletins including:
    • Signposting resources
    • National policy announcements
    • The latest research
    • New resources in education, implementation and information more ..
